Blue-Tailed Skink
(Originally written as part of the NYC Midnight 100-word Microfiction Challenge 2020 Review)
Two full days had passed since I chased that lizard through the raspberry thicket. I thought I had caught it, but the creature scampered off with me holding only a wiggling blue appendage. I dug a hole and buried it then, though I don't know why. I spent those next two days looking for a way home.
The sky in this place shines in colors for which I have no words. On the third morning here, the skink emerged and offered to lead me home in exchange for its tail. Since then I've spent my seemingly endless days searching, digging.
